Description: Librairie des Colonnes was born on a summer day in 1949, on the Boulevard, when Tangier was in its heyday. The Gerofi family ensured the beginning of this literary library. Robert, the eldest from Belgium, is a professor at the Lycée Regnault, archaeologist, and curator of the Museum of the Kasbah. A fine scholar, he kept correspondence with André Gide and Marguerite Yourcenar. He once crossed the Atlantic on Malcolm Forbes's yacht to give a ring to the effigy of the Emperor Hadrian, among other things. More than anyone, he has encouraged literature and the arts in the city on the Strait. His wife and sister, Ladies Gerofi, managed the library in 1951 by proposing a fund in several languages. The Librairie des Colonnes quickly became a meeting place, frequented by the great names in literature: Samuel Beckett, Jean Genet, Juan Goytisolo, Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote, Paul Morand ... Gallimard used the counter, Jane and Paul Bowles the mailbox, Mohamed Choukri the reading room, and Tahar Ben Jelloun the library. Locals and visitors alike see the Librairie des Colonnes as a refuge of the mind.
