Good enough for what it was. Unable to tell story here because it's all spoilers. Too many anachronisms for anything but a fantasy western, but the scenery was nice.
Some bad language and obvious (although not graphic) sex. ( )

====================================

Verily, I say unto you, this is the finest western comedy since Cat Balou (1965). Now, the western comedy is a very tricky business. It has been tried fairly often, but it has proven memorable very seldom. It has given us barely watchable stuff like Blazing Saddles (1974) and completely unwatchable rubbish like the Wild, Wild West (1999).

Maverick is a different matter. It has all the necessary ingredients. The writing – for let’s not kid ourselves, everything begins with the writing – is smart and funny. The plot is clever and well-paced, with a couple of surprises towards the end that may not be easy to guess. The three main characters are all unscrupulous cheats, yet indelibly likeable. They get themselves mixed up in all sorts of dangerous situations, but the tone is so consistently tongue-in-cheek and over-the-top that you can’t help smiling all the way.

The leads are nothing short of excellent. Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster are not generally known for comedy, but they pull it off very nicely in a goofy sort of way, not least in their joint scenes which abound in flirtatious badinage. My favourite bit is when he starts unbuttoning his shirt:

‘How dare you. I am a lady. Not if you were a hundred years old, not if I was a hundred years old...’
‘Oh shut up. I don’t want to go to bed with you, lady.’
‘Why not?’

The late great James Garner was Maverick in the original TV series from the late 1950s. Now he is “Zane Cooper, people call me Coop, suits me just fine”. He is a worthy cross-breed between Zane Grey and Gary Cooper indeed. He fits into the comic trio like cello in a string trio, that is to say he blends beautifully with Mel and Jodie. The supporting cast includes stellar performances from James Coburn as the white-haired cigar-smoking Commodore, Alfred Molina as the villain smelling of re-fried beans and, most hilarious of all, Graham Greene as Chief Joseph, yet another of Maverick’s impoverished friends. The operatic farce Maverick and Joseph perform with the Russian Archduke is one of the absolute highlights.

Some cameos (e.g. Danny Glover), references to other movies (e.g. Lethal Weapon) and glorious shooting on location (e.g. Columbia River Gorge) are all welcome bonuses. So is a fight or two, with fists or guns. Oh, and there is a good deal of poker for lots of money. Who can resist all this? Consistently entertaining and rewarding on revisit, this is a movie that should be much better known. ( )
