This is a nice bright book, with an interesting (but still clear) font and lively layout - a perfect candidate for decorated endpapers but it doesn't have them! :(

...with a heap of hope and a hitch of his britches..."

Includes recipes - too much sweetener, imo, but I like that there are Ugly Crust and Ugly Topping recipes, too. 6 cups granny smith apples, 3/4 cup red raisins or cran-raisins, 1/4 cup walnuts for a 9 inch deep dish. (If you don't know, the 5 Tb flour are to make a jammy sauce from the liquids that would otherwise be runny.)"

Cute story about a country bear who wants an "ugly" pie. He goes to neighbors who give him ingredients that he eventually uses to make his ugly pie, which he then shares with his neighbors. A lot of concepts incorporated-singing, rhyming, and a recipe at the end of the book. ( )
