This book is dedicated to Kate Klemm. With love and appreciation.

First words |
Love-sick Beauties lift their essenced brows, / Sigh to the Cyprian queen their secret vows, / Like watchful Hero feel their soft alarms, / And clasp their floating lovers in their arms. -- The Origin of Society, Erasmus Darwin (1803). / "The play of light on a heaving sea is hypnotic. In Copenhagen, the water is like ink. It is cold and it is cruel, and it deserves all the brutal lore it has earned through the ages, of sea monsters and wild, ravaging storms. Even before Sebastian's letter arrived, I had begun to feel more and more acutely how this sea separated me from home..."

Last words |
And so it was five of us, then, that headed out to the Vale of Eden that day, taking our time as we traveled to Dartmoor to plan, to think, to talk. For, as Sebastian had observed, we had important work to do. -- Emma Andrews / Brighton, February 1928 (Click to show. Warning: May contain spoilers.)

Book description |
Born by blood to be Dhampir -- a vampire hunter -- Emma Andrews nearly lost her life and everyone she loves at Dulwich Manor. Now something evil is preying on students at a northern Lake District girls' school -- the same school Emma's mother attended years ago. Drawn as much by the desire to learn more about her family's secrets as the possibility of vampires, Emma finds the schoolgirls in the grip of a terrible legacy -- the ageless evil of the Cyprian Queen, a dark goddess of ancient legend. Now Emma must tread a careful path -- along with her old friends Sebastian, Father Luke, and the mysterious and dashing Valerian Fox -- deeper into the darkness to face her most paralyzing fears . . . and perhaps come one step closer to the Dracula himself.

My chief complaint about this novel is that Emma seems a little slow on the uptake. I had already figured out who the villain was and how he was able to influence Emma's powers long before it dawned on her. ( )
