"From the mesa near Square-Tower House a keen eye can detect on the opposite side of the cañon the ruins of something not unlike a stone monument raised on a conical, isolated rock.
"

In 1891, the young Swede, guided by the Wetherills, is generally thought to be the first scientist to document, diagram and perform archaeological excavations of some 600 items found in the Mesa Verde region. His book details the pottery, skeletal remains, structures, and tools and was originally published in 1893. Today, this collection is housed in the Museum of Helsinki, Finland.
