NCLA Review -The future should be bright for Deborah Vandermark, who is pursuing her interest in medicine alongside Dr. Christopher Clayton, who is courting her. But in the small 1880s lumbering town there is resistance to the idea of a woman physician and Deborah feels thwarted at every turn. A more devastating blow occurs when Christopher breaks off their relationship and returns home to his troubled family. Deborah is a strong character, independent, headstrong and smart. Readers should be cautioned about the level of racial strife and violence that is portrayed, albeit very true to the times. This is book two of a trilogy, and it does not truly stand alone. Without knowing the back story developed in book one, EMBERS OF LOVE, the reader will be confused and lost in details and characters. Also this book ends on a cliffhanger. Issues will hopefully be resolved in book three, HOPE REKINDLED. Tracie Peterson is the best-selling author of more than eighty novels. Her passion for history shines through in her writing along with vivid settings and unforgettable characters. Rating: 2 —MF ( )

The future should be bright for Deborah Vandermark, who is now pursuing her interest in medicine alongside Dr. Christopher Clayton, who is courting her.
