The Martian by Andy Weir (electronicmemory)
electronicmemory: Andy Weir and James S. A. Corey met at a book signing and agreed that The Expanse series and The Martian are set in the same time-line. So, if you're a fan of The Martian and want to find out what happened after Mars was colonized, read Leviathan Wakes. If you're a fan of The Expanse series, and want to read about the very first Martian colonist, read The Martian. For proof, check a 3 Oct 2015 tweet by @JamesSACorey for confirmation. One of The Expanse books also references a Martian ship named the 'Mark Watney'.… (more)

Good space opera/horror/noir/crime novel. I had watched the first season of the TV series and liked it, but the first novel goes beyond where the season stopped. The only thing that drags it down a bit is Miller going on and on and on about Julie, but I guess the obsession was needed to set up the final act. ( )

This is a sprawling tale of detective work, set out in the solar system. There are competing factions (earth vs Mars, planet dwellers vs those raised in zero gravity). There is strange alien tech that can gobble up a human body relentlessly. But in the end it's the story of a cop doing his last job figuring out what is really going on. ( )

I enjoyed this action-packed space opera. Lots of interesting background and new ideas; I can see how it has become a TV series (which I haven't seen). I'm not sure all the pieces of the plot hung together or maybe I just missed a couple of the links, but I didn't want to go back and look for them; maybe I'll need to re-read this (but it's so looong!). Having been a fan of the TV adaptation for a while, I was excited to delve into the books that it's based on. The first book absolutely does not disappoint. The characters feel a lot more fleshed out, the crisises just as deadly, and the politics far more in depth. You get a much greater sense of Belter life and culture. What the authors have accomplished in this first book alone is awesome. ( )
