The Laird is a nice “enemies turned lovers” romance without the tiresome vitriol of hate between the protagonists that is supposed to pass off as chemistry in other books. Juliana Garnett describes history and setting so well, and the romance between Scottish laird Robert Campbell and English hostage Judith Lindsay is movingly depicted. Their relationship is a steady progression to a happily ever after that doesn’t stray far from the beaten path, but still manages to be wholly enjoyable. ( )
