Epigraph
Patchwork is good economy. It is indeed a foolish waste of time to tear cloth into bits for the sake of rearranging it anew in fantastic figures; but a family may be kept out of idleness, and a few shilling saved, by thus using scraps of gowns, curtains, etc. -- Lydia Maria Child (1802-1880), The American Frugal Housewife
Dedication
This book is dedicated to women and girls--and especially to teachers of sewing everywhere--who enjoy the feel of fabric, the beauty of textures, the precision of stitches, the smoothness of seams, and who delight always in appropriate fabrics carefully cut and made up for a happy purpose.
Mary Brrooks Picken wrote the above dedication for The Singer Sewing Book, published in 1949. Mrs. Picken was a celebrity in her time. She wrote ninety-two books and numerous magazine aticles, and was featured on radio and television. She taught across the United States at schools and universities. Further, she founded and chaired many textile and fashion organizations still in existence today.
Although Mrs. Picken has become anonymous, fifty years later, people worldwide continue to stitch for love and glory. Here's to you all, especially the teachers of sewing everywhere.
