The independent Prisons Inspectorate was established in 1980 to inspect the treatment and conditions of those in prison. This report covers the period August 2001 - August 2002, during which period 64 inspection and thematic reports were published and 62 inspections were carried out in prisons and young offender institutions, juvenile prisons and immigration detention centres. Inspections highlight areas of good practice and aspects which need development within a particular establishment, but also provide a overview of general issues facing the prison service. The report highlights the issue of prison overcrowding, with over 72,000 people currently in prison. Conclusions are drawn under the headings of: safety, including suicide and self-harm; respect, including healthcare and race relations; purposeful activity, including education and training opportunities; and resettlement activities.… (more)
