Christ died outside the city of Jerusalem. Outside the city was also the tomb where the resurrection of our Lord took place. It was from outside the city that he ascended into heaven. The New Testament challenges Christians, those who died and were raised with Christ, to Jive a new life 'outside the city', resisting the influence of the prevailing cultures of the world. The present 'city' of Western culture is in the process of throwing off a moral framework for life and replacing it with a culture in which what 'feels good' holds sway. For the church this presents a tremendous challenge. To relinquish the truth that because we live in God's creation we live in a moral universe will be to fail our generation completely. We must stay with the Bible's teaching of moral absolutes based on the holy character of the living God. And we must continue to proclaim the great evangelical doctrines that speak of the cross of Christ paying the price, dealing with the punishment our sins deserved and offering us righteousness before God as a gift through faith.
