whitewavedarling: Santa Olivia is admittedly built for a more mature audience, but the themes, character types, and situations in the Harry Potter series and in Carey's work make me believe a reader who enjoys one will likely enjoy the other. Santa Olivia, though, is not a traditional fantasy, but more in the lines of speculative fiction, so that fantasy-only readers who enjoy Harry Potter for primarily the inclusion of magic may not enjoy Carey's work. I'm recommending it with this Harry Potter book in particular since, for me, this was the book when the series took a leap toward becoming more adult. Santa Olivia is also probably the beginning of a forthcoming series.… (more)

First time reading the HP series in English, and also the first time re-reading the series since I was a teenager, and I must say, I finally get it why so many people avoid YA books like the plague. This was not my favorite book even when I was a teenager though, and I'm really hoping Order of the Phoenix will live up to my memories.
I must make a note that it's kind of weird reading this in another language when I've known it almost by heart in Serbian. It's almost like reading a completely different book, and it made me realize how impressive, and somehow warmer? the Serbian translation is than the original. ( )

I don't usually count listening to audiobooks as "reading" but this one (and the others in the series) gets to be an exception, because Stephen Fry is just the best. I am sure there's not one person left in the world who doesn't know it yet but I needed to say it anyway.
Seriously, thanks to him it's the best audiobook ever. The immersion into the story is total and it feels almost, almost like real reading.

As to the story itself, I am sure I cannot say anything knew - we all read it already - but I want to share that for some reason this time Cedric's story hit me especially hard. I felt very very sad about him from the very beginning, from the very first scene when we meet him. Because well... now we know =/ ( )

For some reason I seemed to think this was my least favorite Harry novel. For the life of me I can't remember why now that I've re-read it. The fantastic thing about J.K. Rowling is that she is actually incapable or writing a bad novel. Each one is more brilliant than the next. This one is no exception. And may I just say, how much I love Hermione? ( )

Book description
Harry Potter is midway through his training as a wizard and his coming of age. Harry wants to get away from the pernicious Dursleys and go to the International Quidditch Cup with Hermione, Ron, and the Weasleys. He wants to dream about Cho Chang, his crush (and maybe do more than dream). He wants to find out about the mysterious event that's supposed to take place at Hogwarts this year, an event involving two other rival schools of magic, and a competition that hasn't happened for hundreds of years. He wants to be a normal, fourteen-year-old wizard. But unfortunately for Harry Potter, he's not normal - even by wizarding standards.

And in his case, different can be deadly.
