A New York Times and USA TODAY bestseller about a good girl dangerously drawn to the ultimate bad boy. The new Abby Abernathy is a good girl. She doesn't drink or swear, and she has the appropriate number of cardigans in her wardrobe. Abby believes she has enough distance from the darkness of her past, but when she arrives at college with her best friend, her path to a new beginning is quickly challenged by Eastern University's Walking One-Night Stand. Travis Maddox, lean, cut, and covered in tattoos, is exactly what Abby wants--and needs--to avoid. He spends his nights winning money in a floating fight ring, and his days as the ultimate college campus charmer. Intrigued by Abby's resistance to his appeal, Travis tricks her into his daily life with a simple bet. If he loses, he must remain abstinent for a month. If Abby loses, she must live in Travis's apartment for the same amount of time. Either way, Travis has no idea that he has met his match.… (more)

the heart wants what it wants, baby

The main characters need to get help in order to work through unresolved childhood trauma. I'm not surprised that their relationship is unhealthy and dysfunctional. This is not a book that promotes healthy relationships. ( )

Not only did I dislike the story, I felt the writing was weak and relied too heavily on cliches ("He was afraid of nothing. Until he'd met me...I had become his weakness.")

But far, far worse than this was the message -- loud and clear and repeated over and over again from pages 366-416 -- that:
1. A woman is nothing until she belongs to a man, ESPECIALLY not unless she says it while she's having sex with this man, who happens to be the only man she's EVER had sex with (while he's been free to sow his oats).
2. The goal of sex is marriage. Pages 369-416 confirm this awful, restrictive, hopelessly antique view, with the end of the book being absolutely fixated on it. This wouldn't be so bad -- I have nothing against marriage -- were it not for the rather grim message that marriage expressly confers ownership rights on another human being. Ugh.

All in all, this hugely popular book (among the female aged 18-25 set) represents a giant leap backward. Wa-a-a-y-y-y back. ( )

Really not a fan of this book. Main character is a virgin, love interest is an emotionally damaged player/bad boy who beats the crap out of just about everyone who talks to main character. If they weren't both really possessive and crazy, it would be an abusive relationship. Really, they're impulsive and unbelievable. Not even any redeeming sexual chemistry/sex scenes. Good thing the book is short! ( )
