This book reminded me of my cat. Small sentences - great for a toddler and/or preschool read aloud. The story talks through the bedtime ritual and what Brownie and then Pearl does in their parallel actions to get ready for bed. Some cute not-typical phrasing like "body balls" when the two get cuddled up in bed. I would read this book in a toddler storytime. The story follows some aspects of a daily routine with full-page colorful interactions and a few recognizable characteristics. Preschoolers would like this book also. ( )

Yes, these are thin stories, but their simple texts about every day life and their bold, clear, friendly illustrations make these rare, perfect books for ones and twos. No, she doesn't have a healthy snack. No, she doesn't brush her teeth. No, "hit the hay" remains unexplained as an idiom. No, there are no grown-ups in the bathroom while she's in the tub. No, cats should not eat chocolate chip cookies. You know what? None of that bothers me. I am sold on ""Pearl does not need jammies. She is already snuggly" and "happy little bed balls" and "under the moon covers" and especially, "Read it again, please!" ( )

I nearly wept while reading this tale. It is sooo beautiful. I even tweaked my bedtime routine because of this book. Beautiful. ( )
