Welcome to Gor, a parallel Earth where social norms are exotic and the way of life is brutal. In the fifth book in the Gorean Saga, the deadly assassin Kuurus is intent on a bloody mission of vengeance. His adventure takes him from the caste of the pleasure-slaves, who are rigorously trained in the rules and techniques of sexual ecstasy, to the brutal arenas where humans participate in deadly hand-to-hand combat. He witnesses violence, conflict, and uncertainty, as the inhabitants of Counter-Earth are forced to confront their destinies...no matter how exalted or debased. Rediscover this brilliantly imagined world where men are masters and women live to serve their every desire.… (more)

Another great read from John Norman. This one has Tarl Cabot pretending to be an assasin. It's a swift page turner, the story being helped along a good deal with the usual vignettes of slave-girls being used and abused to varying degrees. He falls for yet another girl, Elizabeth Cardwell, who was abducted from Earth by 'The Others', a rival group to 'The Priest Kings' and whom he eventually frees(of course).

His original love, Talena, gets but a passing mention at the very end along the lines of 'damn, I still didn't find her', which is no great surprise really when you consider he wasn't looking for her in the least. Still, at least he's got himself another little (ex)slave-girl in Elizabeth, or Vella as she's called on Gor.

Very easy to read. Can't put them down once I've started, even though there's stuff mixed in there that should really be considered quite important but is simply glossed over or mentioned as an afterthought at the end(see above).

Looking forward to #6 - Raiders of Gor now.

In Volume Five our hero is softening on the owning and training of slaves, encouraged no doubt by the insights of Earth woman Elizabeth Cardwell. Having said that, he still remains notably less evil than main villain, the slave trader Cernus of Ar.

In a relatively interesting sub plot, Assassin Kuurus scours Ar for the murderer of Tarl Cabot. ( )

The Gor series quickly degenerated into, well, seriously erotic fiction fine tuned (?) to the male dominant school. I did not pursue this series to its end, even in the fantasy-starved 1970's. Sadly even the Horseclans books were more interesting. ( )

More gor. John Norman cannot write but he is a genius worldbuilder. these books are texts that became the foundation for a living online human culture. 5 stars for the worldbuilding part, and the cultural importance. ( )

Book description
    THE TRAIL OF VENGEANCE

kuurus was one of the dread caste of assassins on the hidden world of Counter-Earth. He was hired for twenty pieces of gold to avenge the death of a warrior. Now he was on his way to the great city of Ar, where he was forbidden by ancient sentence of death ever to appear again.

He knew nothing of his intended victim, save that the man had taken part in the savage tarn races at the Arena of Ar. And all he knew of the man he was to avenge was a name.

The name was that of Tarl Cabot, the great warrior and servant of the all-powerful Priest-Kings. And that was strange.

Because the true name of Kuurus was Tarl Cabot!

    THE FESTIVAL OF SLAVES

The black-haired girl walked back and forth before me, her hands on her hips. She strode over to the other two men, and then returned to where I was bound.

"Now, you will serve me," she announced. the other girls laughed and shrieked, leaping up and down, clapping their hands.

"On your knees," she ordered. "Serve me as a Pleasure Slave."

"I think not," I said.

I felt the two ropes on my throat tighten. Suddenly the two girls on the ankle ropes jerked on the cords and I fell forward heavily, spilling the wine to the stones.
