This was actually a good book. It was my first time ever reading anything by this author and I loved it. her writing is to the point and she knows how to keep you interested for sure. ( )

Joy Candellaro is a recently divorced librarian in Bakersfield, California. As the Christmas season approaches, she is very unhappy. Upon arriving home, she finds her sister Stacey pregnant and offering a wedding invitation to her and Joy's ex-husband's wedding in June. Joy drives to the airport and buys a ticket on a charter going to the Pacific Northwest. Unfortunately, the plane crashes and she decides to walk away from her former life. She ends up in Rain Valley, Washington, at a bed and breakfast that is closed. The 6-year-old son, Bobby O'Shea, and his father Daniel are trying to sell it as Bobby's mother, Maggie, has died recently. She and Daniel were divorced for two years. Both are devastated. Joy has an almost instant bonding with Bobby and decides to stay awhile. Then on a magical Christmas Eve, Joy's life is again ripped apart. She must find the strength and determination to find the love and family that cannot possibly exist and the life she seeks. ( )

Okay. So.... How do I put this nicely? I just didn't like this book.

Kristin Hannah's book The Nightingale put me on a trajectory to try to read as many books of hers as I can. Thankfully, this wasn't the first book I read or I might have been running away.

This is set up to look like a Hallmark Christmas love story, but instead it features a woman who is far too forgiving over a sister who slept with her husband is now pregnant (when our lead desperately wanted a baby), and a mystery that is far more fantastical but isn't really hinted at throughout the book.

Honestly... This was almost a DNF and I started kind of "not reading" the book. I was reading, but I don't think I was all that present for a bit. I would hardly call it a romance, but it hints a romance may pop up soon... Honestly, this book was mismarketed. Severely so.

Two out of five stars. At least it was readable. ( )

This book was, overall, a good, quick read. However, the ending felt rushed. This has been my least favorite of Kristen Hannah's books. I was quite disappointed by the unfinished ending. Also, there wasn't much character development on the leading male. I wouldn't have placed this in the romance category as there weren't any romantic scenes or connections. The book was more about a woman finding herself and growing to care for a boy and his father. ( )
