I picked this up at a store in Estes Park, Colorado while enjoying at least three species of hummingbirds visiting the feeders throughout this Rocky Mountain vacation resort. Living in eastern Nebraska, I only ever have one species of hummingbird -- The Ruby-Throated variety -- visit my feeders.

This book does a remarkably good job of explaining all the basics about the various North American species of this vibrant little bird, talking about the biology, behavior, feeding, migration, nesting and breeding of hummers. But, the thing I enjoyed the most is the photography. Tekiela and his fellow photograph contributors provide some really gorgeous pictures to accompany their text.

This is a fairly light-weight volume, and the text is extremely simplified -- I've read many other hummingbird books that provide far more detailed textual information. But Amazing Hummingbirds provides a satisfactory mix of good information and great visuals. For the price -- $14.95 -- I felt like I got my money's worth. I'm tempted to Interlibrary Loan his volume on Owls, to see if it's worth purchasing for my parents, who are owl collectors. ( )
