legal/crime thriller (sort of like John Grisham or Scott Turow). California author.

The protagonist just sounded too much like a fake personal ad: a protector of defenseless children in bad situations (CPS officer and possible FBI mole--what? did I miss something?) who lives in spacious warehouse in SF, and also windsurfs, plays in two basketball leagues, runs, and oh yeah, plays guitar? and is single and looking for love? Ugh. The redeeming flaw apparently was "drinks a little too much" and maybe also "is angry for being pushed out of a job by his nepotist boss." Aside from that, though, the writing seemed ok and it probably would be easy to recommend this to folks who've exhausted other authors in the genre. ( )
