Dr. Robert West was thrilled to find himself at last, only a few miles south of the Arctic Ocean. After a week-long voyage north up Baffin Bay, the steamer Frobisher had dropped the young marine biologist off at a way station on Jones Sound. From here, Robert was to fly northwest, into the true Arctic.
Robert had to admit that this place wasn’t much. It had originally been a tiny fishing village, a place where ocean-going vessels could stop to refuel, stock up on various provisions, and leave mail to be forwarded slowly and uncertainly - south.
Now that several oil companies were doing a lot of drilling in the Arctic, the small town had expanded somewhat. Itboasted a landing strip, a sort of bar…
