Fairly solid outing in this newest outing in the Prey series, with minimal cop talk (not good) and a small appearance by that fuckin' Flowers (good). The ending was quite exciting, but getting there was just a bit dull. There was not as much action as I"m used to seeing in Sandford's works...but they all can't be perfect. ( )

It was so nice to have one of my favorite authors give me an accounting crime. Few know about zero balance accounts or are aware that they are using them--Paypal, for example. Big corporations transfer enough money to cover their payroll and accounts payable and leave the rest in an interest-bearing account. I can see why this type of account would be used for money laundering or for the scam in this book. Excellent story. I loved it. ( )

An affluent family is found tortured to death, and suspicion quickly falls on a Mexican drug lord called the Big Voice. A Federales investigator and his female assistant and the DEA are called in to find out how a modestly successful software company could be laundering money, which quickly traces back to some local Minneapolis banks. Meanwhile Lucas Davenport is mugged at an ATM after his morning run, and sends Virgil Flowers in pursuit of a pair of suspected meth heads. Lucas makes a number of key deduction, but in trapping the Mexican killers, endangers his loved ones (again.) ( )

Book description
Lucas Davenport has seen many terrible murder scenes. This is one of the worst. In the Minnesota town of Wayzata, an entire family has been killed — husband, wife, two kids, dogs. On the wall, in blood: "Were coming." No apostrophe.

There's something about the scene that tugs at Lucas's cop instincts — it looks an awful lot like the kind of scorched-earth retribution he's seen from Mexican drug gangs. But this is a seriously upscale town, the husband ran a modest software company, the wife dabbled in local politics. None of it seems to fit.

Until it does. And that's when everybody starts coming to town: the DEA, the Mexican Federales, and some independent operators who are decidedly less welcome.

Where it all leads... will take Lucas into the darkest nightmare of his life.
