Summary:
The sequel to Die Roten Matrosen. The book plays in the early 1930s, at the time when Hitler comes to power. It is seen from the perspective of 15-year-old Hans, who witnesses the way life is becoming harder for the Jews. Hans must decide what side he is on: for or against his brother, who is a Communist; for or against his sister, whos boyfriend joins the SA. When his brother and brother's wife are both arrested for being Communists, Hans must decide if he will live with his back against the wall (mit dem rucken zur wand), especially after he meets and falls in love with a Jewish girl who is afraid what Hitler has in store for her.
