salvate.

I didn't realize this book was a prequel until I was about halfway through it - I'm glad I finally figured that out because how magic was taught made no sense to me, as I thought this book was set after the Black Magician trilogy.

While I liked Tessia as a character, I wasn't really attached to anyone else. It was interesting to see how things worked in Kyralia versus Sachacka and also understand how the events of this book shaped the world of Sonea that I've come to know and love. I do think the book dragged on a little, especially compared to how quickly the end wrapped up. I think the pacing kept me from really becoming engaged. It's worth reading if you enjoy the Black Magician trilogy and you're curious about some prior historical events - but definitely don't start here if you're wanting to dive into this world. Start with The Magician's Guild and get to know Sonea and company first. ( )
