Romance. Young Adult Fiction. HTML:

Following on the heels of her "must-read" debut novel (New York Times best-selling author Jay Asher) One Moment is perfect for fans of Sara Zarr and Gayle Forman.

This was supposed to be the best summer of Maggie's life. Now it's the one she'd do anything to forget.

Maggie remembers hanging out at the gorge with her closest friends after a blowout party. She remembers climbing the trail with her perfect boyfriend, Joey. She remembers that last kiss, soft, lingering, and meant to reassure her. So why can't she remember what happened in the moment before they were supposed to dive? Why was she left cowering at the top of the cliff, while Joey floated in the water below--dead?

As Maggie's memories return in snatches, nothing seems to make sense. Why was Joey acting so strangely at the party? Where did he go after taking her home? And if Joey was keeping these secrets, what else was he hiding?

The latest novel from the author of The Tension of Opposites, One Moment is a mysterious, searing look at how an instant can change everything you believe about the world around you.

Praise for One Moment:

"Infused with page-turning mystery, One Moment is as heartbreakingly real as it is unexpectedly romantic."--Cat Patrick, author of Forgotten and Revived

"One Moment took my breath away. Beautifully written, achingly romantic, and so much tension the pages seem like they're turning themselves. One of the best books I've read in ages."--Lauren Barnholdt, author of Two-Way Street

"
A page-tuner that grabbed me by the throat, and was impossible to put down!"--Katrina Kittle, author of Reasons to Be Happy

"Good, solid drama about the power of secrets to test the bounds of friendship, with just enough tension to satisfy teen readers."--Kirkus Reviews

"McBride (The Tension of Opposites) skillfully interweaves Maggie's flashes of memory with present action, making for a tense and absorbing psychological mystery."--Publishers Weekly

Maggie has a crazy-happy life... she hangs with a group of friends that she's had since grade-school, including her amazing boyfriend Joey. Memorial Day weekend is supposed to be a fun weekend of parties and swimming, but then Joey has an accident... and everything changes. The 5 friends are all trying to deal with the death of their friend, while Maggie is trying to figure out what really happened the day Joey died. She knows that she went to the top of the jumping rock with him, but she doesn't seem to remember what happened after that. Why did he jump and she didn't? As she struggles to regain her memories, she starts finding out things about Joey.... secrets he'd had. And Maggie starts to wonder "How well can you ever really know a person?"

I was given this as an ARC from NetGalley to review :)

I loved this book!!! It was seriously addicting for me! I kind of knew the direction it was going in, but I still had to read it to believe it! I don't want to give anything away, but I really liked the issue of dealing with someone's flaws after they are dead. When someone dies all people want to remember are the good things, but this book made the characters face the issue of someone dying with unresovled issues (and not good ones).

It would be a really good beach read for this summer because it's got that whole mystery thing going on. I think I am going to read it again before my license expires :)

One Moment by Kristina McBride is a poignant young adult novel about loss, love, friendship, secrets and betrayal.

Maggie Reynolds and her circle of friends, including her boyfriend, Joey, are enjoying a lazy afternoon at the gorge when a horrible accident leaves Joey dead. In the aftermath of his death, Maggie struggles to remember what happened right before Joey leapt off the cliff. Much to her dismay, she soon learns that her seemingly perfect boyfriend lied about his whereabouts the night before. As Maggie continues to try to recapture her memory of the events preceding his death, she cannot help but wonder what other secrets Joey might have been keeping.

As Maggie grieves for Joey's loss, she is comforted by her memories of their relationship. However, as more details about Joey's life are revealed, she slowly begins to realize that she did not know Joey as well as she thought she did. And if Joey was keeping secrets, is it possible their friends are too? Why was Joey fighting with one of their friends the night before he died? Why is their group of friends becoming splintered as they mourn Joey's death? Why can't Maggie remember those last few minutes before Joey jumped from the cliff?

Part character study and part mystery, One Moment by Kristina McBride is a riveting young adult novel that is full of tension as Maggie tries to piece together what happened to Joey. The cast of characters are vibrantly developed with very realistic flaws and imperfections. The plot is surprisingly free from angst and although a little predictable in some areas, overall, it is refreshingly unique. All in all, it is a very touching and thought-provoking young adult story that deals on some heavy topics without unnecessary drama.

Going into this book, I expected teenage drama, lack luster emotion, and over the top metaphors.... What I didn't expect was a heartfelt story full of guilt, mystery, and life lessons.

One Moment opened my eyes to the things that are hard to acknowledge. It showed me that life is short, regrets are damaging, and forgiving is the key to one's well being. It gripped my heart in it's fist and squeezed tightly. I was consumed by the mind twisting mystery and overwhelmed by the reality that one moment can truly change everything. It made my mind race and my heart pound. I wanted the truth to be revealed, but then once it was, I wanted to hurry and bury it again.

Maggie was an average teen facing adult problems. Her life turned upside down when her boyfriend died and her memory left with him... To make things worse, secrets slowly surface and her truth quickly turns to lies. As her memory fades in and out, she is left with the painful what if? question. Adam, her close friend is linked to the chaos in an intimate way and though Maggie wants to keep him at arms length, eventually the walls crack and true feelings shine through.

There was bitter anger, painful goodbyes, but also new beginnings. I really enjoyed the book and recommend it to all readers. It may be based around teens, but the message is clear for people of all ages. ( )

Maggie is going to jump off a cliff--literally--with her boyfriend Joey. They're at the top of the cliff that overlooks the local swimming hole, and she's finally gotten up the nerve to make the jump--and commit to Joey as well--but then she blacks out. When she comes to, her friend Adam finds her on top of the cliff, and there's been an accident: Joey jumped, but landed wrong and died in the fall. And Maggie can't remember anything about the jump! She spends the next few weeks trying to recover her memories, while dealing with her grief, a police investigation, the changed dynamic between her closeknit group of remaining friends, and a burgeoning mystery: she begins to learn little things about Joey, and they don't add up to the Joey she knew. Will she get the answers she needs to heal?

Good book, a suspenseful, emotional and psychological mystery. Written by an Ohio author, also a plus! ( )
