La presente antología reúne las fábulas más
célebres de la tradición hindú. Extraídas de los
libros que se propusieron recoger la literatura
oral, estas fábulas pretenden instruir divirtiendo.
El lector saca, de cada cuento, un consejo
práctico, una advertencia, una moraleja. A partir
de animales que tienen la capacidad de sentir
como los seres humanos, se revela la esencia
de una civilización que no concibe la separación
entre el hombre y el animal.

La fuente más importante ha sido el
Panchatantra, texto que se compuso entre el
siglo I y el VI de nuestra era y que fue tomado
como modelo a lo largo de la historia por distintas
culturas de Oriente y de Occidente.
