A lucky find in an Oxfam bookshop; her books are not often chanced upon. This is a delightful tale of a little late-Victorian girl who travels to the Shetland Islands to live with her only surviving relatives, a crofting family. She gradually overcomes her timidity and town-bred ways, survives shipwreck with her hardy little cousins, and has further adventures when they are all washed up on the Norwegian coast. At the same time Katharine Oldmeadow painlessly educates her readers in the ways of crofting life and Norwegian farming. Begins like Frances Hodgson Burnett's "A Little Princess" and ends a little like "Heidi".
This copy was presented as a Methodist Sunday School prize in 1938, according to the pretty little bookplate at the front.
