Nick Fury has gathered a special team of Secret Warriors. But these young heroes have a lot to learn in a very short time when they uncover a conspiracy that reaches from the Oval office to the temples of Japan and even beyond death. The Leviathan organisation is awakening, their tendrils wrapped deep inside the US government. And when a shadow war breaks out between Leviathan and the ruthless Hydra, it's up to Fury and his Secret Warriors to put the pieces together and take them both out. I've read a lot of Marvel trade collections/omnibuses since the Avengers film came out. I've worked my way through Avengers Disassembled, House of M, Civil War, Secret Invasion and Siege - along with some of Thor's solo trades, the New Avengers, Mighty Avengers, and Journey into Mystery. And, this is the best book I have read of them all.

After coming across Fury's Secret Warrior's team a few times within the crossover event tie-ins, I decided to pick up this omnibus on impulse when I found it at a huge discount. I never expected it to be such an exciting, well written, convoluted and engrossing conspiracy thriller! I burned through all 900+ pages in two nights and not because the material is light. I simply could not put it down. And apart from Captain America appearing a couple of times at the end, none of the more familiar all-star heroes take part. It's all Nick Fury, the Howling Commandos, and his "caterpillars".

When Fury gets wind of Secret Invasion, and that many allies and heroes might not be who they say (or think) they are, he decides to build a new team of heroes from potential metahuman candidates, the caterpillars. Daisy "Quake" Johnson leads the inaugural team which includes a child god, a mystic, a strongman, a speedster and a grandson of a Ghost Rider. But the book goes far beyond what this one team is working on when Fury learns that Hydra has infiltrated SHIELD and every major corporation around the globe (It's all connected!). And then the Leviathon organization enters the fray. The way the plot plays out is BRILLIANT. There is a lot of action, sometimes with deadly consequences, but also plans within plans. I found myself cheering by the end, it was so well played.

Overall, I cannot recommend this book enough. In fact, if you read only one graphic novel ever, be sure it's this one. Yes, it's that good. Highly recommended. ( )
