Normally a big Siri Mitchell fan. Usually for the often humorous banter between the main characters. I know this had a more serious topic but the book seemed tedious at times. Most books I read I want to finish reading to see how they end. This one I just wanted to finish.

The love story develops from two unexpected characters in their quest for their cause and what is right.
The mystery and twists in plot kept me reading.
The historical time period is one that brings many authors the "same" kind of plot----this one is not.
I have noticed in several of her books, (this one included) the tendency for the heroine to rebell against her parents' wishes to do what is right.
Enjoyed the book. Glad for the "thinking" book, that doesn't excessively whine about their problems, but moves through what must be done. ( )

I really enjoyed this book! It was one of those books that I didn’t want to put down.

Summary:
Hannah is a young Quaker woman during the Revolutionary war era in Philadelphia, PA. The Quakers are against taking sides in the war and prohibit their congregation from taking part in the politics, taking up arms or getting involved in the war. Hannah’s family has already been impacted by her brother becoming a patriot soldier. Her family disowned him and the church banished him.

When she learns her brother is a prisoner in the local prison for patriot soldiers, Hannah is desperate to see him and talk to him. Her church and family forbid her from attempting to contact him because he has gone against the church and must face the consequences of his decision.

Meanwhile, Hannah meets Jeremiah, a former British soldier turned patriot. He offers Hannah an opportunity to get a pass to see her brother in prison. In return, he asks that she helps him by becoming a spy for General Washington to support the patriot army.

Hannah wrestles with her decision to help her brother. To do so involves going against her family, her church and the risk of being caught for being a spy. What will Hannah do with the dilemma of choosing to do God’s will even when it is contrary to beliefs of her family and congregation?

I absolutely loved this charming bit of historical Christian fiction set during the Revolutionary War. The format was exceptional in that each chapter alternated between the point of view of either Hannah Sunderland or Jeremiah Jones which allowed for really intense character development and a much more functional use of the first person since you're not stuck in just one character's thoughts. The premise is that of two unlikely spies working together to coordinate a prison escape for some four dozen Patriot soldiers during the Revolutionary War. Hannah's questioning of her faith's version of peace and Jeremiah's questioning of his heart's desires intertwine to create a beautiful story of love flowering where it is least expected. I found myself absolutely unable to put this book down because the characters and their lives were so engrossing. Usually it takes some secret plot or strange happening to keep me turning pages, but all this book needed to be a page turner was really good character development. The ending was phenomenal and left me with a huge giddy grin on my face. You will not regret reading this book.

Note: I received this historical Christian fiction book for free from Bethany House Publishers to write an early review on and am so glad that I made the request. The above review is my honest take on the novel. Read the full review at http://knittylove.blogspot.com/2012/05/charming-read-about-faith-love-and.html ( )
