A great story - and a terrific audiobook.

I've read this more than once, but the reading by Marc Thompson, with special effects and just enough Williams music - really brings it to life. Zahn is a master at making the sword and planet fantasy of Star Wars into a near hard SF! ( )

3 1/2 stars: Good

Part 2 of a 3 part trilogy, that are all really one large, seamless story. Part of the Star Wars "Legends" series (ie. no longer canon).

"The dying Emperor's most cunning and ruthless warlord, Grand Admiral Thrawn, has taken command of the remnants of the Imperial fleet and launched a massive campaign aimed at the New Republic's destruction. Meanwhile, Han Solo and Lando Calrissian race against time to find proof of treason inside the highest Republic Council--only to discover instead a ghostly fleet of warships that could bring doom to their friends and victory to their enemies.

Yet most dangerous of all is a new Dark Jedi, risen from the ashes of a shrouded past, consumed by bitterness, and scheming to corrupt Luke Skywalker to the dark side.

-------

The above doesn't tell much of the plot... this series introduces Mara Jade (the future Mrs. Skywalker), ysalmari (animals who block the Force, rendering Jedi powerless), Leia and Luke having creatures under Thrawn's control intent on murdering them, Luke being drawn by a Dark Jedi, and much more. I found the story fun enough to follow, but not amazing. Particularly as I was drawn to it from Zahn's recent "Thrawn" which is exemplary. I can tell this is a much older series, he's a much better author now. Thrawn is a side character in these books, and you don't really get to know him at all, though his basic traits of understanding his enemies; through their art and his master tactician skills, are still present.

This particular volume brings Lando back into the story, which is fun. ( )

Zahn has placed a lot of guns on the mantelpiece, that go off precisely as planned in Book 3. ( )

So much fun! and to leave me on a CLIFHANGER?!?! COME ON!!! I totally want Mara to become a good guy, is that wrong of me? There's something between Luke and her and I wanna know where it leads..

I will say that if you have never listened to an audiobook before, or think it's not for you, you should try this series. It's more like listening to a movie with all the sound effects and wookie howls, it's FANTASTIC!

I'm off to the next one! ( )

Second or third time around and I still love this series to pieces. It is just as good as I remember it. The characters are interesting enough that you don't want the bad guy to lose so you can find out his plot (and more witty banter between the admiral and captain) ( )
