Over a century ago Illusionist David Berkeley committed suicide in his mansion by the sea, thus dooming his restless spirit to wander forever. Or so the local legend goes. Professor Rhys Davies, a part-time parapsychologist, is writing a book on California hauntings and he believes the crumbling ruins of Berkeley House will make a terrific chapter - if he can gain access to the house and grounds. A short and easy read. Not the ghostliest of ghost stories but still had me nervously glancing at the doorway while reading this in the middle of the night. All in all a very nice Lanyon book with all his trademarks in the mix. It's been a while since I've read characters that seem as real as Lanyon's. ( )

I really enjoyed this spooky little novella from one of my all time favorite authors. It felt more like a mystery with a twist than a proper ghost story - the paranormal factor was a bit too low-key for me - but it was still very engaging and nicely paced. For such a short story, the chemistry between the two MCs was great.

Lanyon’s writing style was wonderful, as always. ( )

More focus on the ghost story than the romance. Even so I still felt the connection between Rhys and Sam and I found the writing of the ghostly part genuinely creepy at times.
I'd have liked a few moments more of Sam and Rhys at the end but that is a small qualm on an otherwise enjoyable read. ( )
