Not the ghostliest of ghost stories but still had me nervously glancing at the doorway while reading this in the middle of the night. All in all a very nice Lanyon book with all his trademarks in the mix. It's been a while since I've read characters that seem as real as Lanyon's. ( ) I really enjoyed this spooky little novella from one of my all time favorite authors. It felt more like a mystery with a twist than a proper ghost story - the paranormal factor was a bit too low-key for me - but it was still very engaging and nicely paced. For such a short story, the chemistry between the two MCs was great. Lanyon’s writing style was wonderful, as always.

Over a century ago Illusionist David Berkeley committed suicide in his mansion by the sea, thus dooming his restless spirit to wander forever. Or so the local legend goes. Professor Rhys Davies, a part-time parapsychologist, is writing a book on California hauntings and he believes the crumbling ruins of Berkeley House will make a terrific chapter - if he can gain access to the house and grounds. The only obstacle is brooding cop and self-appointed caretaker, Sam Devlin. As obstacles go, Devlin is a big one. But you know what they say. The bigger they are, the harder they fall.
