A great story of a boy growing up against all odds to make it in the big time. He was born in small town, moved to a smaller town and enjoyed success at an early age. By junior high he was being bullied daily and not enjoying success at his craft. Early days of High school came and he was just floating along. By mid high school he was beginning to show his potential. Junior and Senior year saw his stock rise but only after a little of hardship. The kid began to only count on himself and began to turn away people who could help him later. The 1st part of a 3 book series that will in the 2nd book detail his college life. The 3rd book will detail his professional career in a world he was not ready for as a man. Many details of his friendships, mentors, family members,coaches and women will be detailed in the 3 book series.… (more)

Wellman, décidément un bon réalisateur puisqu'on lui doit aussi l'excellent Wild Boys of the Road, évoque l'ascension fulgurante d'une jeune femme de province, férue de cinéma, qui rêve de devenir actrice à Hollywood. Après un départ difficile, elle réalisera son rêve au-delà de ses espérances, jusqu'au firmament du monde absurde et cruel d'Hollywood qui peut brûler ce qu'il a idol âtré la veille.
Ce monde cruel, c'est l'homme qu'elle aime qui en fera les frais. Acteur adulé qui lui "met le pied à l'étrier", il devient assez vite la risée de tous en raison de ses abus d'alcool et de ses écarts de conduite qui défraient la chronique.
Impossible d'être longtemps soi-même dans ce monde artificiel qui s'épie, se jalouse, s'affuble de pseudonymes, d'histoires présentes ou passés ; ce qui existe est constamment tranformé, ce qui n'existe pas constamment inventé. Dans ce contexte, aucune seconde chance ne sera offerte à celui qui trébuche.
La grand-mère de la nouvelle star l'avait prévenue : la réalisation d'un grand rêve se paie. Esther Victoria Blodgett, alias Vicki Lester, tutoiera les étoiles mais perdra son amour. Malheureuse et découragée, elle pense devoir tout abandonner avant de relever la tête et de poursuivre le rêve dont elle a payé le prix. Rien ne semble impossible aux personnages de Wellman. Il leur insuffle un supplément de vie.
Un film fort bien rythmé, réalisé et interprété. Un très beau portrait de femme des années 30. Une réussite. ( )
