Consists of three novellas (the "files") with continuing characters and time progression. The stories deal with ingenious money-laundering, implausible hybridization in a fertilization clinic, drug smuggling and a forerunner of Bernie Madoff. Our hero is hard-boiled and scruffy, but he has a cat, is dedicated to his job as a private detective, and has an on-going relationship with his lady boss. A good read. ( )

Three limp, unconnected episodes featuring Timothy Cone, "the Wall Street dick"-- in an unusually sloppy, thoroughly hackneyed offering from an uneven, crass mass-producer. ... Sanders tries to liven things up--with slangy present-tense narration, with lame, repetitious jokes, and with periodic couplings by Cone and his skinny boss Samantha. ... Grossly synthetic and thoroughly unappealing: only for Sanders' most undiscriminating fans.
