Bibliographic Information: Nate Evans and Stephanie Gwyn Brown, “BOOM! BANG! ROAR! A Busy Crew of Dinosaurs”, Illustrated by Christopher Santoro, Published by HarperCollins, ©2012, 32 pages
Genre: ABC Book
Summary: This book uses the alphabet to help children learn. The book contains dinosaurs working on a construction crew. The book uses a new letter on every page and contains several words on that page that start with the same letter.

My Response: This book is okay but I found it hard to read. This is definitely a second or third grade book. I think first graders might be able to read it but some of the words are fairly big. The book does have very good illustrations though. It is not a very good ABC book in my opinion.

his is a complete, out of the park hit with my 4 year old, combining dinosaurs and construction equipment, which he loves, with an alphabet plot (which I'm interested in). A group of construction-worker dinosaurs is called in to build a mysterious thing, which turns out-- on the last 2 page spread-- to be a sort of adventure park. It reads well, and has some catchy lines; while not every word in the page for a letter begins with it-- or where would the plot be?-- the text emphasizes the letter of the page both at the beginning of words and within words. X and Q, with their E words, might be confusing to a child; but the rest is great alphabet fun. The silly dinosaurs are on every page doing different things (my son especially likes the various dinos in A-shirts jigglingly running jackhammers, and the creation of the volcano, followed by vamoosing!) Compare with B is for Bulldozer or Dinosaurs Dig! ( )

Dinosaurs operating big machines at a construction site. Something many young boys will enjoy. ( )

PreS-Gr 1--This picture book combines favorite topics of the preschool set (trucks, dinosaurs) with ABCs, alliteration, a graphic collage of action-packed images, winning cartoon faces, humor, and an assortment of searchable items. ... The tale may be a bit contrived, yet readers will be looking at the frenetic display of detailed images on each spread. ... The clutter here is sometimes overwhelming, but an amazing wealth of detail will keep readers occupied for hours. From a surprised, helmeted compsognathus chomping on his sandwich to 15 favorite construction tools on the final pages, this is a combination of visual entertainment and text with a multitude of uses in most libraries.

A teeming dino crew in hard hats and safety vests create organized if frenetic chaos on a mucky construction site in this alpha-romp. ... Rhymed, if not always regular, stanzas of alliterative text provide a heavy background beat.... the pictures are chock-full of funny side business for young eyes to pick out too. Pure pleasure for children addicted to dinos, the delights of big trucks and decoding visual jumbles.

Dinosaurs and heavy-duty vehicles share the spotlight in this alphabetical tour of a construction site.... Moving through the alphabet... [the authors] present a lively four-line rhyme that plays up each letter.... Just as the authors pack their verse with alliteration, Santoro (Grandpappy Snippy Snappies) jams each mixed-media spread with outsize comedic moments and enough details to delight construction-loving readers. Photographic elements (boulders, crates, rubble) mix with Santoro's glossy cartoon dinosaurs.... Like their crew of dinosaurs, this team gets the job done.
