This little volume bears a mis-leading title-page, derived from the circumstances of its production. This is in fact, the libretto, in the original Italian and in modern Englist translation by the incomparable musicologist Howard Mayer Brown, for the first American performance, in Januuary 1967, of Jacopo Peri's Euridice, the oldest surviving opera. The Italian title as stated is Le musiche -- note the plural -- di Jacopo Peri, nobil Fiorentino sopra L'EURIDICE del Signor Ottavio Rinuccini . . . It is a rare souvenir of an important performance commemorating, in turn, an even more important performance. ( )
