Photos of 3-D illustrations of action-like figures and rhymes as clues set the stage for children to see the relationship between addition and subtraction. “3 birds look alive! Add 2 more. That makes _____ (5).” “5 birds in a tree. 2 fly away. That leaves _____ (3).” Teeny characters at the bottom of each spread offer an a-ha commentary: “Yes! Subtraction is the opposite of addition.” Children see the number sentence and also a clear photo illustrating what’s happening: “11 frogs race to the line! How many hope over to leave behind 9?” The author offers an explanatory note to parents and teachers with suggestions on how to read the book to engage pre K children gain a conceptual understanding of subtraction as “take away.” Although uninspiring, children will likely chime in with rhyme. Based on Common Core State Standards. ( )
