Turner wird beauftragt, eine französische Fregatte abzufangen, die den ehemaligen preußischen Offizier Friedrich von Steuben nach Nordamerika bringen soll, wo er den rebellierenden Kolonisten militärischen Drill beibringen soll. Wie man weiß, ist er ja angekommen, so dass man hier keine wirklich spannende Handlung hat.
Stilistisch ist das Buch eine Verbesserung gegenüber dem ersten Band, was auch daran liegt, dass viele Szenen an Land spielen und man nicht 300 Seiten lang mit nautischem Jargon bespült wird. Die französischen Schnipsel stören, weil sie meistens unkorrekt sind. ( )
