I remember when I finished "Don't Hex with Texas" thinking, for the first time, 'she should self-publish the next book because the publishing houses are obviously too stupid to know a good thing when they see it'. So I was thrilled when I read earlier this year that Ms Swendson announced that she'd decided to do just that with the fifth book, Much Ado About Magic. I had it on my e-reader as soon as it was available, and finished it the same day. The story didn't disappoint - long held secrets revealed, lots of magical action, and the same wonderful cast of characters in a light, frothy, fun tale. My only 'gripe' (and it's not really that) is the seeming distance between Merlin and Katie - in previous books she was a bit of a confidante to Merlin and I saw no evidence of that in this book. Still, an excellent read and if Ms. Swendson ever decides to physically publish, I'll buy another copy to add to my bookshelves at home. I'm truly looking forward to the sixth book in October. ( ) Everything gets wrapped up in a bow in this (the fifth) book in the series. Not a lot of it makes sense. I think the author just took parts of Harry Potter and just reworked it here and there. In "Much Ado About Magic" we finally figure out who the big bad is that is trying to take out MSI Inc. and Merlin. Katie is back in New York in this one. She's happy to be back with her roommates and to be dating Owen. Honestly this book should have focused more on him since the majority of the plot was about Owen's real parents and his adopted ones. Also once again, not impressed about Merlin. I don't want to get too spoilery in this review, but honestly this book should have been the end of the series. Things get wrapped up so to me it didn't make a lot of sense why this book has 8 books in the series from what I could see. The writing is so so for me. And I have to say that the book/series has become rather repetitive. We have Katie and Owen not communicating that well. Bad guy does something. MSI Inc. tries to respond. Bad guy does something. MSI, Inc. tries to respond. There is talking. Then there is a lame magical fight. The Enchanted Inc/Katie Chandler novels are easily some of my favourite books. They have just the right blend of elements to make me inordinately happy when I read them, and I'm nearly always in the mood to reread them. I felt the fourth book ended well, but I still wanted to read more about Katie and Owen and Merlin and Rod and all the rest. So I was extremely happy when I found out Shanna Swendson would be publishing the fifth book in the series as an ebook. I carefully marked the release date on my calendar so I could be sure to purchase a copy (and I really hope there will also be a print edition at some point in the future, because I do so like my books to match in format where possible). This book did not disappoint in the slightest. I was torn between wanting to savour it slowly and wanting to gobble it up in big chunks of delightful storytelling. It had been a few months since I read the previous books in the series, but I was able to slide right back into the story and connect with the characters once more. The pacing was excellent and I think this book would provide a pretty good entry point to the series (though you will definitely get more out of it by reading the previous books first). At the very end of the book was a teaser for the sixth book, which is slated to come out in ebook format on 1 October 2012. I already have the date on my calendar, and am eager to see what will happen next. no reviews | add a review

To Do: Manage Magical Mayhem Katie Chandler is back in New York and just in time to help Magic, Spells, and Illusions, Inc. with the latest crisis. A magical crime wave is sweeping the city and wizarding whiz Owen Palmer thinks the chaos-causing spells look awfully familiar â?? like something his arch-rival Phelan Idris would create. When Idris's rogue firm Spellworks starts selling amulets to protect against these spells, Owen's suspicions are confirmed. While Owen and the other wizards scramble to unravel the wicked spells, it's Katie's job as the new director of marketing for MSI to fight the battle of public perception. When Katie stages a showcase for MSI's magical achievements, she doesn't realize she's playing right into a devious plot more than three decades in the making. To save the magical world, she'll have to prove who the real enemy is by digging deeper into Owen's mysterious past. If she fails, she not only stands to lose a magical war, but she could also lose the man she loves. No library descriptions found. |
