When Little Hedgehog sees a shooting star one night, he and the other animals become excited, rushing to wake Badger. As the group of friends heads up the hill to get a better view, singing "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" along the way, they find the ground collapsing beneath them, and end up in an old, abandoned badger set. They need to get out, if they want to get to the top of the hill...

The sixth picture-book featuring the gentle adventures of Little Hedgehog and his woodland friends, One Starry Night pairs a simple story with lovely artwork. In truth, I found M. Christina Butler's narrative here a little ho-hum, but Tina Macnaughton's beautiful illustrations definitely made up for it, with the gorgeous shades of purple and green creating a sense of nighttime depth and mystery. As always, with the Little Hedgehog books, there was a little something extra on the page, with the star itself appearing in shiny paper on each two-page spread. Sadly, although hedgehog wears a velvety red cap on the cover, it is plain paper throughout. Recommended primarily to fans of the earlier books in this series, who are looking for more. ( )
