"Richelle Mead, the #1 New York Times, USA Today, and Wall Street Journal bestselling author of the Vampire Academy and Bloodlines YA series--whose books have sold more than one million copies in hardcover--debuts on the Dutton list with Gameboard of the Gods, the first novel in her Age of X series. In a futuristic world nearly destroyed by religious extremists, Justin March lives in exile after failing in his job as an investigator of religious groups and supernatural claims. But Justin is given a second chance when Mae Koskinen comes to bring him back to the Republic of United North America (RUNA). Raised in an aristocratic caste, Mae is now a member of the military's most elite and terrifying tier, a soldier with enhanced reflexes and skills. When Justin and Mae are assigned to work together to solve a string of ritualistic murders, they soon realize that their discoveries have exposed them to terrible danger. As their investigation races forward, unknown enemies and powers greater than they can imagine are gathering in the shadows, ready to reclaim the world in which humans are merely game pieces on their board. Gameboard of the Gods, the first installment of Richelle Mead's Age of X series, will have all the elements that have made her YA Vampire Academy and Bloodlines series such megasuccesses: sexy, irresistible characters; romantic and mythological intrigue; and relentless action and suspense"--… (more)

It is very rare to find a book with this many pages that keeps me hooked on every single page. Following Mae and Justin in their rocky, confusing relationship as they learn about the literal Gameboard of the God keeps readers on the edge of their seat wanting to know more about the thrilling lead characters. I'm glad I finally got to reading right before the second book came out so I didn't have to wait long to continue on with this series. It's so addicting and I'd suggest anybody who enjoyed Vampire Academy, the Dark Swan series or anything that keeps you on the edge of your seat! Beautiful book! 5 out of 5 for sure!! ( )

Phenomenal world-building, here, and wonderful, interesting characters. The world has become a much smaller place, one ruled by careful genetic mixing and government mandated atheism. What happens, then, when the gods want to come back? After a series of unexplained murders, disgraced investigator Justin March teams up with super-soldier Mae Koskinen to try and save the next target. No matter what they want to believe, the evidence is leading them to a dark and unexpected place. ( )

Do not get the audiobook. The narrator is really bad at action scenes and there are more than a few in here. This is one of those books that forces a chemistry between characters. There were some really not cute scenes that were out of keeping with the personality of the characters that made me angry as a reader (to the point of yellig back at the narrator). That whole angle could have been removed easily and the story still would have been compelling.

If I had not spent money on this book I would not have finished it. ( )
