Gilbert the possum tries to be mean, but finds he hasn't the stomach to be mean, by accident he ends up not being a jerk to Lewis and maybe they can mend their non-existent friendship. Lewis is mean, but not the worst person, kids will be inherently selfish and cruel, but things will work out in the end.

There is no real big conflict that doesn't get fixed, and for a short kid's book, that's just fine. ( )

This is a story about a possum named Gilbert who recieved an invitation to Lewis's birthday party; however, Gilbert was not excited because Lewis was always mean to him in school. Then, he began thinking that maybe Lewis wanted to be his friend. The next day at school he tried talking to Lewis but Lewis was still mean to him. He told Gilbert that his mom made him invite all of the boys in his class and so that is why he received an invitation. When Gilbert and his mom went looking for Lewis a birthday present, Gilbert decided that a frying pan would be what Lewis deserved. However, once he got to the party and saw that Lewis was being nice to him, he began to feel bad about his choice of present. Then, when Lewis opened his present from Gilbert, he was so excited; it was a Martian Spaceship. Gilbert's mother knew what was going on all along and had decided on a better present for Lewis from Gilbert.
This is a good book to read to children in kindergarten, first grade, and second grade. I think that any day is a good day to read this to children because it has to do with making new friends and getting along with others. In addition, I think a good time to read this to children is when it is someone's birthday in the class because it is a story about a birthday celebration. ( )
