As always, puppy Clifford gets up to some gentle mischief and slapstick humor, this time in an elementary school. His lunchroom jello struggles make the book worthwhile.

This story is when Clifford is a puppy and Emily Elizabeth brings him to school with her. It is Clifford's first day of school ever. Clifford manages to make a few messes throughout his day at school! The teacher tells Emily that she should bring him back when he gets to be a little bit bigger! I think children would enjoy this story because it is humorous when Clifford makes the messes. The illustrations in this book are very simple. Teachers could use this book as a way to tell children that pets aren't allowed to go to school because they aren't like children or kids. ( )

CLIFFORD'S FIRST SCHOOL DAY by Norman Bridwell is a fantasy story that gives children hope that anything is possible. The story starts out as his owner Emily Elizabeth going to school and Clifford, this big, red dog joining her. He get the attention of all the school children and everybody loves him. This dog ends up doing everything the students do. This story is empowering for women because there are many female characters throughout the book which gives young girls confidence in being female. This story could teach children that if they want to achieve something such as a dog learning the same things as the students then they have to dream big. The illustrations throughout the book are done in paint which gives the story bright insights as to what the characters and scenes look like. ( )

This is a picture book of the well-known character Clifford the red dog. This story takes place when he is a puppy and Emily Elizabeth brings him to school with her. It's his school day ever. He makes a couple of messes and the teacher tells her that he can come back when he's a bit bigger. This is a simple story that young readers would enjoy. Teachers can use this at the beginning of the school year to show examples of different characters and their first day of school. Teachers could have their students write about a different animal on their first day of school. The illustrations in this book are pretty simple and look to be watercolor with basic colors and clean lines. ( )
