Gregory the gull and Hudson the penguin are best friends. When Gregory leaves Hudson behind to fly with his fellow gulls, Hudson is sad. He tries to fly too. When he can’t fly, he feels useless. Gregory dives into the water to show off his skills. He doesn’t resurface, because he is caught in a fishing net. Hudson dives in to save him. Then the gulls are grateful to the penguin. Hudson is recognized as a great diver, fisher, and friend.

The theme of friendship through change is handled beautifully. Young readers will also understand the frustration of physical limitations. The author blends humor and drama successfully. When Gregory is caught in the fishing net, the potentially scary situation is resolved quickly and happily.

Byrne illustrates this wonderful story with colorful and bright details like a little crab that shows up on several pages. The artwork supports the movement, humor, and emotion in the story.

Teachers, librarians, and caregivers can use this delightful book for a lively story time with a feel-good ending. Recommended for public, school, and home libraries.
