( ) "Hooray for You" was given to me by my H.S child development teacher after I won the award for Family & Consumer Sciences. This book has a special play in my heart and it is my favorite book that I have. This book is so great for many reasons. The language is not only descriptive, but it speaks to you. This book is all about celebrating who you are and that there is not another you. The language and writing used is appropriate for children and gets them thinking, "wow I am awesome!" It is clear and flows greatly. The language and writing also involves rhyming words in the book. The illustrations enhance the story by showing that nobody is the same, "youness" as they say in the book. "Youness" is described as "your style of being, your rhythm or vibe. It's the grand sum of you that sets you apart. Your body and brains plus your spirit and heart." The illustrations are age appropriate and look like kids drew them which I think helps deliver the message even better. The message is that you are one of a kind and you should celebrate that. Nobody is the exact same as you and self love is heightened in this book. This message is shown throughout the entire book and ends with "Look in the mirror. Love who you see. Stand tall. Smile big. Shout, 'Hooray for me!" I love this quote and this book because the message is so strong and so true for everyone. It definitely cann help kids through the "I wanna be like her" stage. This is standard and typical fare about being yourself. It’s been done before, and will be done again. Over all it’s nice. It has a Jamie Lee Curtis feel, but sometimes the rhymes come out harsh. I believe this to be because of how the illustrator highlighted certain words and phrases. It’s beautiful, but that emphasis on a strong word may not be in the rhyming pattern therefor throwing it off. This story is quite nice, but not destined to become a classic. no reviews | add a review
