First they were three, now there are two. Can Jason and Morgan make a relationship work without Paul? For years the three of them had been inseparable, first as friends, then lovers. It's been ten years since they parted for what was supposed to be a year apart to pursue their dreams. This isn't the reunion they planned then. It's nine years too late for one thing, and they are one man short for another. In the years since Paul's death, Morgan hasn't exactly been waiting for Jason to reach out to him. He's been too busy trying to forget, to move on. Until Jason sends the right message. Is the painting just an excuse to see his ex again?… (more)

For me, this story was missing a key component since one of the 3 MCs has been dead for 9 years already and the other 2 MCs are only now reconnecting. I just felt removed from the action. ( )

Dealing with the death of a loved one is always difficult, but for a man like Morgan, who is not exactly in touch with his emotions in the first place, it becomes an almost impossible task. What makes it even harder is that there used to be three lovers, one of whom died, leaving the other two behind to deal with the loss. The problem is that they can't, because they stay apart for nine years. This is the touching story of the two survivors coming back together, and finally starting the healing process.

Morgan, who tells the story, is a nerd, a science geek, and not very good at recognizing, never mind dealing with his emotions. After college he went off to California, since he hates the Colorado winters, to teach. When Paul dies, Morgan thinks Jason doesn’t want "just him", and stays away for nine years. He just cannot face Jason and the rejection he thinks is waiting for him. When Jason finally contacts him, Morgan does go back to Colorado, but he has no idea what effect the visit will have on him. The realization that Jason does want him changes everything.

Jason is an artist, a painter, and his emotions always float close to the surface. He and Paul (who was a poet at heart) were always good with words, but Jason cannot talk to Morgan if he isn’t there. Jason's big problem is that he thinks Morgan doesn’t want him anymore. What else is he supposed to assume when Morgan breaks his promise of returning to their home town on the anniversary of their graduation? The depth of Jason's feelings is undeniable, but trusting Morgan again is hard.

If you like stories about men dealing with loss in very different ways, if you enjoy reading about two opposites figuring out how they fit together without the help of the third, linking partner, and if you're looking for an emotional read that will most probably make you cry, first in sadness, then in joy, you will probably like this book. It may be short, but it's very touching.
