The sixth book in this fascinating series focuses on Hex, the alpha demon. At the center of his inner conflict, and the test that follows, is not just his special ability as a healer, but also his quality as a leader. Self-doubts and stress have weakened his resolve and created a dangerous distance between him and his lovers.

Echo plays a key role in helping Hex come to term with the way he leads and how he sees the relationship with his lovers. Admitting he has feelings for the other demons and Echo doesn’t come easy for this super-macho guy, and the fact that he believes emotions will weaken them in the war with Ares makes everything even more complicated for him. Echo is severely tested in this book, and I suspect he will struggle with what happens for a while. I’m also more and more curious about his origins and what exactly his role in all this is. It’s becoming increasingly clear that it is more than ‘just’ providing the central link for the bond between the demons.

The group made real progress in this book. Only two more tests are to follow, and while the two remaining demons are the ones with the biggest self-doubts, they are also the ones who will have the most support. With two more tests and the final war to come, I’m sure the final three volumes will be increasingly interesting. ( )
