For thousands of years, Cross has wandered the earth, a mortal soul trapped in the undying body left behind by Christ. He's been a thief, a con man, a soldier and a drunkard. He's fought as a slave in the Colosseum and as a knight at King Arthur's side. But now he must play the part of reluctant hero, as an angel comes to him for help finding the Mona Lisa--the real Mona Lisa that inspired the painting. Cross's quest takes him into a secret world within our own, populated by characters just as strange and wondrous as he is: gorgons and dead gods hidden away in museums; faeries that live in countryside pubs, trapping and enslaving unwary travellers; and super-rich collectors who trade magical artifacts among themselves. He's haunted by memories of Penelope, the only woman he truly loved, and he wants to avenge her death at the hands of his ancient enemy, Judas, a forgotten god from an ancient time. The angel promises to deliver Judas to Cross, but nothing is ever what it seems when Judas is involved, and when a group of renegade angels looking for a new holy war show up, things truly go to hell.… (more)

Went into this book knowing it's the first of a trilogy... so you'll most likely be left hanging. Other than that I knew nothing much.
A *very* different storyline... well, no. Story is really not that uncommon (VERY simplified: boy meets girl, they fall in love, they are torn asunder)but the characters now. Hm. There might be a lot of folks who take offense.
Me, well, I figure if I can read paranormal/supernatural/fantasy/urban fantasy... what are some twisted angels to me?
Decide for yourself. Remember, it is fiction.
I give it a 3.5 - liked the characters, the story... meh. ( )

The first tale in the Book of Cross series follows Cross, a soul who woke with no memory and found he could never die—or rather, he could never stay dead. Sent on a mission by the angel Cassiel who offers to deliver Cross’ greatest enemy in return for the Mona Lisa… the real Mona Lisa, not the painting… Cross finds himself involved with angels and demons, faeries and gorgons, dead royalty and cursed mummies as he seeks out Mona Lisa while taking a brief respite from his usual hobby of tracking and killing angels to take their Grace (something his body desperately craves and that allows him to do most of the tricks he’s picked up over the years, such as healing himself or others, increasing his speed, and casting sleights). Peter Roman, alter-ego of B.C. novelist Peter Darbyshire, simply knocks readers over the head with every imaginable concept. The Mona Lisa Sacrifice is a hard-boiled fantasy that mixes the immediate, visceral thrills of supernatural action with a tough-talking, noir-styled narrator named Cross, who approaches uncanny events and figures with a deadpan wit and glib asides.

The novel never lets the reader pause for breath, bouncing back and forth at breakneck speed between flashbacks of lost love and the modern quest, and the unstoppable protagonist is precisely as powerful as he needs to be at any given moment to move the plot along. Fans of the genre will find one of its ultimate expressions here, but the casual conflation of Christ, sasquatches, Greek myth, and the TV show Supernatural may be a bit much for others.
