Hailed as "one of the best writers in the business" by Susan Elizabeth Phillips, multi-award-winning author Maggie Osborne delivers hilarious and heartrending tales of resilient women full of grit, pride, and dignity who shine through hard times. Now meet the most irresistible and independent heroine of them all, a woman called Low Down, who never had anything good happen to her until the day she asked for the one thing that only a man could give her. . . . As scruffy and rootless as the other prospectors searching for gold in the Rockies, Low Down wanted nothing in return for nursing a raggedy bunch through the pox. But when pressed to reveal her heart's wish, she admits, "I want a baby." Not a husband, not a forced marriage to the proud man who drew the scratched marble and became honor bound to marry her. To be sure, Max McCord was easy on the eyes, but he loved another woman and dreamed of a different life. Yet they agreed to a temporary marriage that could end only in disaster. But can this strange twist of fate lead to the silver lining that both have been searching for?… (more)

I quite liked the story as Low Down was a pretty unique lady. I enjoyed reading about her experiencing so many firsts and her joy about becoming part of a family. I was less enthralled by Max, as he seemed so bitter throughout the story (not without cause, I mean, I had some empathy). But he was so caught up in feeling put-upon for so long. And the I
The set-up required some pretty serious suspension of disbelief, but overall I quite enjoyed it. I'm rating down a bit because I wanted more time with Max and Louise (Low Down) and I really wanted Philadelphia to get her comeuppance. I was not at all happy about her resolution. ( )

I *hate* love triangles or when the hero/heroine's heart is otherwise engaged.... Might not get around to this one...

I really enjoyed this western historical romance. The main characters LowDown/Louise and Max marry early in the book and there aren't big misunderstandings or what have you that drive them apart. There was plenty of tension and conflict in that Max had been in love with and engaged to another woman up until he was honor bound to marry Louis. But they were together learning to make their marriage work while the other situation played out.

Characterization was good all around and the secondary characters were well drawn and believable. Even though the other woman had a substantial part in the story she didn't take over the plot in any way. Solid writing all around, good word choices that illustrate characters. No info dumping all the action and development happen on screen. The plot was solid and tight. A wonderful example of only the necessary scenes but plenty of them.

A sweet sweet story. ( )

When Low Down, or Louise, nurses a group of prospectors back to health after a smallpox epidemic, her one wish for a reward is a baby. The men hold a lottery, Max McCord is the winner. Because he's an honorable man, he agrees to marry her though he's due to wed his fiancee in two weeks. Low Down is dirty and greasy, far different from Philadelphia, the dainty rich girl he was supposed to marry. But she's kind and works hard on his ranch, despite her inferiority complex.
Honestly, I didn't think I'd like this story much, but I loved it! Louise is just adorable right from the beginning and she tries so hard to overcome her roots as a child from the orphan train. Max is a good guy who realizes that Louise and ranching are what he really wants, though schemer Philadelphia turns up pregnant which is a big strain on his marriage. The writing is good and the story both humorous and poignant. If you're looking for a different type of Western romance, give this book a try. You won't be disappointed. ( )

5 stars, Forever Favorite

SILVER LINING
by Maggie Osborne

One of my most favorite books. "When I look at my spoon, I remember that I've done something good in my life--Once."

Maggie Osborne frequently uses a strong female protagonist in her novels. Low Down is a wonderful character.
