Fred Bruce wrote two commentaries on the book of Acts. The first was The Acts of the Apostles: The Greek Text with Introduction and Commentary. The second was an English-based commentary for the New International Commentary series. This is the latter work. The general reader will prefer the NIC volume because it does a better job of interacting with other scholars in the commentary tradition of Acts, has more theological discussion (though still not heavily emphasized), and treats historical issues in a greater extent than the Greek text commentary. Bruce considers Acts to a work of high historical value, arguing in the same tradition as scholars like William Ramsay and Colin Hemer. It is a solid work written from an evangelical perspective, but one should supplement it with the commentaries by Conzelmann, Haenchen, and Barrett. ( )

Almost everything by Bruce is excellent in content and style. This commentary is no exception. ( )
