Georgia researches and writes books on sensational topics, such as the sex scene in New York City. When she is asked to study and write about prostitution in India, she jumps at the chance.

Her experience in India is not what she expected. Her guide, Karma, and the host organization, Urban Help, sponsoring her work have a bigger agenda. They need the visibility of Georgia, as a Westerner, to achieve their goal. At first willingly, but later with neither her knowledge or consent, Georgia finds herself part of a plan to bring major criminals to justice.

The story is told in two voices: Georgia's and Karma's. Their very different perspectives...in fact, the different realities they live in, bring a depth to the story. Fundamentally, this is a story of family loyalty, and how our connections to those we love shape our actions.

I enjoyed this story. It's well written and believable...and complex. ( )

Book description
from amazon ca :

When Georgia accepts the assignment to research prostitution in India, she enters blithely, confident of her ability to remain objective in the face of the difficult subject matter. Provided with an Indian guide, Karma, Georgia feels that she is in control of her well-being and safety. But India, being India, soon overwhelms her preconceptions as Karma's first attempt to facilitate her assignment is to arrange for her to witness an encounter between a prostitute and a john.

Told in two voices, Georgia's and Karma's, Hooks grapples with the discrepancies between a Western and an Eastern take on prostitution in a country where tradition, modernity, and necessity cast disturbing slants on the truth.

A morality tale told from vastly different personal circumstances and orientations, Hooks draws in the uninitiated Georgia, as she in turn helps the grieving Karma to realize a route away from his spoiled hopes.
