"The author is haunted by childhood memories of his friendship with a black family on a cotton farm in South Alabama during the early forties, of roasting sweet potatoes in the fireplace, of fatback simmering on a woodstove, of a tin roof singing in the rain. He recalls endless days of picking cotton in the sultry, hot August sun with a caring black family. Intertwined with those nostalgic memories, however, are the bitter recollections of the sometimes cruel and horrifying treatment of the black people on the farm, and of his own racial conditioning as a result of growing up with people who harbored strong biases against his black friends. Only time and racial progress will help, he believes. However, during the mid-eighties the author becomes concerned by unmistakable signs that white racial animosity is increasing, and by his familure to rise above his own racial conditioning. When he meets an elderly black man with a similar background who is concerned about increasing black racism, the two join together to search for way s to overcome their own racial biases, and perhaps to help others in overcoming theirs. Most of all, however, this poignant story is about the heartwarming friendship and inspiring trust that develop between the two men, one black and one white." --dust jacket flap.
