Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) was the third United States President (1801-9) and the principal author of the Declaration of Independence. An advocate of republicanism, he envisioned America as an 'Empire of Liberty' that would strive to promote freedom around the world. First published in 1853-4, this nine-volume edition of Jefferson's writings shows the breadth of his intellectual and political interests. His autobiography, letters, diaries and political memoranda reflect a life lived at the centre of pivotal events, including the French and American Revolutions, and the founding of a new nation. Through them we discover the evolving relationships between the United States and the European powers, and the development of the American constitution and judicial system. Volume 8 contains all his inaugural addresses and messages as President, his writings on topics such as slavery, trade, and the constitution of Virginia, and biographical notes on other distinguished figures.… (more)

I would not even know where to begin reviewing this tome, which collects many of Thomas Jefferson's writings. Of all the Founding Fathers, he has always been the most intriguing to me with his numerous pursuits -- a real Renaissance man. I had read many of the collected writings separately over the years (I was a history and political science major) but reading them collected this way was a great immersive experience. ( )

This is a must have for any Jefferson fan. It contains an excellent compilation of his letters. Because he published nothing other than his Notes on the State of Virginia, one has to read his letters in order to understand his thinking.

What can be more interesting in terms of history as well as autobiography than reading letters and essays, notes and musings of great men, preserved to teach generations to come. This series is very well edited and beautifully bound, and we are looking forward to using these in homeschooling too. ( )

Thomas Jefferson was a genius. I'm afraid he is rolling over in his grave now. ( )

Time and accident are committing daily havoc on the originals of the valuable historical and State papers deposited in our public offices The late war has done the work of centuries in this business. The last cannot be recovered but let us save what remains not by vaults and locks which fence them from the public eye and use in consigning them to the waste of time but by such a multiplication of copies as shall place them beyond the reach of accident.
